Michelle Slack-Clarke is a founding partner at Walwyn Slack Clarke & White (WSCW), specializing in both general litigation and corporate and commercial transactional matters. Michelle’s experience spans a range of complex legal matters, including winding up and dissolution of local and offshore entities; obtaining court orders for the appointment of receivers and worldwide freezing injunctions; property transfers and setting aside fraudulent transfers of property; providing capacity opinions and advising on energy-related transactions; preparing expert evidence for use in multijurisdictional proceedings relating to fraudulent disposition of assets; and advising on seafarers’ rights, bareboat charters, and registration of vessels and mortgages with the St. Kitts and Nevis International Ship Registry. Furthermore, she adeptly assists clients in arbitration proceedings and other forms of alternative dispute resolution, including mediation.
Michelle regularly appears before the Magistrate Court, the High Court, and the Court of Appeal of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, St. Kitts and Nevis Circuits, where she is known for her zealous and competent advocacy. She has specialized expertise in drafting legislation, regulation, and policy, is a notary public of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, and sits as the President/Speaker of the Nevis Island Assembly.
Professional and Community Involvement
- President of the Nevis Island Assembly (current): As President, Michelle is responsible for managing the business and proceedings of the Assembly, ensuring order during sessions, and overseeing the overall administration of parliamentary business. She serves as the presiding officer during sittings of the parliamentary chamber of the Nevis Island Administration, ensuring strict adherence to Parliamentary Rules of Procedure.
- Director/Trustee, University of the Southern Caribbean, Trinidad & Tobago: Michelle serves on the Board of Directors of the USC, which is the governing body of the University. As a member of the Policies Subcommittee, she is instrumental in drafting policies that govern the code of conduct for both staff and students.
- Director/Secretary, Maude Crosse Preparatory School: In her role as Chairperson on the Board of Directors, Michelle helps oversee the governance of the Maude Crosse Preparatory School, which educates students from ages 2/3 to 12. She plays a key role in drafting policies that govern the conduct of pupils and teachers at the school.
- Director, Each One Reach One Inc.: Michelle contributed to the establishment of Each One Reach One Inc., a local non-profit organization and mentorship group focused on the educational, spiritual, physical, financial, and social advancement of women and girls in Nevis. The organization provides free mentorship services to young women facing various challenges.
- Religious Liberty Advocate, Charlestown Seventh Day Adventist Church: As an advocate for religious liberty, Michelle champions religious tolerance and supports individuals who face discrimination based on their religion or preferred day of worship.
- Acting Chairperson, Steering Committee of the Nevis Island Youth Council: Michelle played a pivotal role in revitalizing the Nevis Island Youth Council. She drafted the constitution for the newly organized Council, hosted and participated in youth town hall meetings across the island, mentored young men and women to become youth advocates, and organized a spoken word event to provide a platform for young voices on social issues.
